Finding your passion seems like a strange journey to take. It makes you second guess yourself because if you’re actually passionate about something, how is it possible you don’t know what it is?

The truth is, for most of us the thought of pursuing something we love has been beaten out of us by life, by school, by parents and by the world. You know you have these secret goals, these dreams, these passions but we push them aside for what is “safe” and what everyone approves of. To your friends and family, you live a life where you put on a happy face and seem fulfilled but underneath all of that you’re still aching to wake up everyday knowing that you get to do not just what you want, but what you love. You even have yourself tricked. You’ve convinced yourself that you’re passionate about things you aren’t, and you’ve tried very hard to drown the dreams of days gone by.

You may have even convinced yourself that you’re not the “kind” of person who can or deserves to have a life of fulfillment. That you don’t have a passion. Stop telling yourself these lies. Are you a passionate person? Do you have it in you to make a living doing what you love?

Of course you are and of course you do

What you know

You know that you are a passionate person and you know that you have something valuable to bring to the table. Those things are the start of your journey toward making a great living using your passion (or passions) to guide your path.

Your next step

If you already know your passion, great! You’re done this step. If not, then it is time to take stock of where you are and your vision for where you want to be. Narrowing it down isn’t as simple as the typical question of “If you could do something everyday and not worry about money, what would you do?” If it were that simple then the world would be full of people doing nothing but having huge amounts of leisure time, sleeping in, staying healthy and generally not doing much of…well…anything. To identify your passion it takes more than that, and has hokey as this is going to sound, it takes some REAL soul searching and self reflection. A much better set of questions to start with when trying to find your passion is:

What REALLY fulfills me?
Does what fulfills me serve both my good and the good of others?
Is it something that people will pay me for (either as a service, a course or a product)?

The Rules

This is something that I don’t take lightly. You MUST follow these rules for pinpointing the passion you first want to pursue for profit. I will personally guarantee that if these rules aren’t followed, nothing but disappointment and frustration will show up when you try to move forward.

Rule # 1: The action or process you’re passionate about must serve the good of others.

Rule # 2: The action or process you’re passionate about must serve your own good.

Rule # 3: You must be able to deliver this action/process in a fashion for which you will receive monetary compensation. (You have to get paid)

Rule # 4: The action/process must not be based on a current trend, fad, or passing popular item or activity. It must be evergreen, meaning that if you choose, this is something that you could continue doing for as long as you like or are able.

That’s it! Once you’ve narrowed it down to 1 or 2 passions you’re ready to get started on the next step, Identifying Your Gift.

If you have any troubles with figuring out these steps, or just have some questions, leave a comment below and I’ll answer you as quickly as I can.
